Birth details are sensitive personal data. This page describes exactly what Horā does with them today — not what it might do later.

What is collected

To cast a chart, Vedic Horā needs a date, a time, and a place of birth, and optionally a name. These are sent to the server, used to perform the calculation, and returned to you in the response. If you create an account we also hold your email address — that is how you sign in, since there is no password. If you apply to become a bookable astrologer, we additionally collect your qualifications, languages, biography and any credential documents you choose to upload, for the sole purpose of that review.

What is stored

Casting a chart stores nothing. If you are not signed in, the calculation happens in memory and your birth details are discarded when the request ends. If you use the browser’s own convenience features, a copy of your last entry may remain in that browser’s local storage on your own device; clearing your browser data removes it.

Saving a chart is always an explicit choice. If you create an account and press “Save to my account”, we store the birth details you entered so the chart can be recast later. They are encrypted before they reach the database (AES-256-GCM, with the key held outside the database), so the stored data, its backups and its replicas hold ciphertext rather than your birth moment.

An account also stores your email address, an optional display name, and a label for each saved chart. Sessions are kept only as a hashed token — the cookie in your browser is the sole copy of the real value.

What we deliberately do not store: the readings themselves. A chart is recomputed from your birth details every time, so nothing we hold is a record of what a reading said about you — and a corrected rule always yields a corrected reading.

The Guru (AI conversations)

“Ask an Ācārya” and the Guru chat send your question, and the chart data needed to answer it, to Anthropic PBC’s Claude API to generate a response — this is the one place your birth details leave our own server for a purpose beyond geocoding. Anthropic processes this data to return the answer and, per its own terms, does not train its models on it.

Some conversations yield durable “memories” — short, verifiable astrological facts (for example, a stated profession or a life event you mentioned) kept so a later conversation does not ask you to repeat yourself. These are encrypted at rest, listed in your account, and can be deleted one at a time or all at once; deleting your account removes every one of them along with the conversations they came from.

Astrologer consultations

A live session booked through Consult an astrologer is peer-to-peer WebRTC: the audio or video itself never passes through Horā’s server, only the connection setup does, and no recording or transcript is kept. If you apply to become an astrologer yourself, your application and any credential documents are visible only to Horā’s moderators during review; once approved, your professional profile (name, expertise, languages, experience) becomes public, exactly as any professional directory listing would be.

Third parties

  • Open-Meteo — when you type a place name in the birth-place field, that text is sent to the Open-Meteo geocoding service to resolve it to coordinates and a timezone. Only the place text is sent; your name, date and time of birth are not.
  • Anthropic PBC — processes AI-chat conversations as described above, for accounts using the Guru or Ask-an-Ācārya features.
  • Razorpay — if you buy a pass, credit, or subscription, your payment details go directly to Razorpay’s own checkout. Horā never sees or stores your card, UPI or bank details, and receives only a confirmation that a specific order was paid.
  • Brevo — sends transactional email on our behalf (for example, notifying you of an astrologer-application decision). Only the address, name and message content needed for that email is passed to it.
  • Hosting — the site runs on Render, whose infrastructure processes requests on Horā’s behalf and keeps standard server logs.

Horā does not sell data, does not run advertising trackers, and does not share your birth details with any third party beyond what is described above.

Server logs

Ordinary web-server logs (request path, timestamp, IP address, user agent) are produced by the hosting platform and retained for a limited period for security and debugging. Birth details are not deliberately written to application logs.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and comparable laws elsewhere, you may ask what data is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, and ask for it to be erased. You do not need to write to us for any of these:

  • See and export everything — “Download my data” in your account returns one file containing your account record and every saved chart, with the birth details decrypted so they are readable.
  • Correct it — rename or delete any saved chart, or change your name, at any time.
  • Erase it — “Delete my account” removes every saved chart and the birth details behind them, every Guru conversation and memory, ends all active sessions, and scrubs your email address. It cannot be undone.

If you have never signed in, there is nothing to request: we hold nothing about you.

Children

Vedic Horā is not directed at children. A chart may of course be cast for a child by their parent or guardian; if it is saved, the same encryption, export and erasure rights apply, exercisable by that adult.
