About Vedic Horā
Vedic Horā वैदिक होरा, from the Indian Institute of Vedic Science & Technology, is a Jyotiṣa engine built on a single stubborn principle: if a statement cannot be traced to a classical verse and a real astronomical computation, it should not be made at all.
Why it exists
Most astrology software falls into one of two camps. Professional desktop programs compute beautifully but hand you a wall of numbers and leave the interpretation entirely to you. Consumer apps write fluent, comforting paragraphs that are not derived from anything in particular — and increasingly, are generated by language models that do not know where the Moon actually was.
Vedic Horā is an attempt at the third thing: computation you can verify, joined to interpretation you can trace.
How it is built
Two layers, kept strictly apart.
Gaṇita — the astronomy. Planetary positions come from the ephemeris. The ayanāṁśa is sidereal Lāhirī. Bhāvas are whole-sign. Sunrise is computed by rise-transit for your exact coordinates. None of this is approximated, and seven astronomical anchor tests run against it on every change to the code.
Phala — the interpretation. Every prediction is a digitised classical rule, returned with the text it came from: the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, Phaladīpikā, Sārāvalī, Jātaka Pārijāta, Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi, Bṛhat Saṁhitā and the Tājika Nīlakaṇṭhī. Nothing is improvised.
Above them sits a consensus layer: fifteen independent evidence engines — house lordships, Ṣaḍbala, aṣṭakavarga, vargas, yogas, Jaimini kārakas, argala, avasthās, upagrahas, daśā evidence and others — each reading your chart on its own terms. Their conclusions are weighted into a confidence score for each life area, and where they disagree, Horā shows you the disagreement instead of hiding it.
What Horā will not do
- No invented verses. A citation in Horā points at a real passage. If a rule cannot be sourced, it is not shipped.
- No language model in the prediction path. The same chart produces the same reading today and in ten years. Nothing is generated on the fly.
- No hidden uncertainty. Confidence is shown. Conventions where traditions differ are disclosed in the reading itself. Where the evidence is thin, Horā says so.
- No point predictions about death, disease or disaster. Longevity is presented as a classical framework only. Health and mental-health topics carry explicit limits.
The evidence layer
Horā tests its own rules against documented history — timed, Rodden-rated birth charts of public figures with individually sourced dated events, and a separate catalogue of dated world events for mundane astrology. The results are published on the evidence page exactly as they came out, including the tests that found nothing. Reporting only the hits would make the numbers meaningless.
Who is behind it
Vedic Horā is built and maintained by the Indian Institute of Vedic Science & Technology, which also runs the VidyāSetu learning platform. The same standard governs both: classical material presented faithfully, with its sources named, and nothing asserted that cannot be traced back to a text.
Status
Vedic Horā is under active development. Accounts, saved charts, a daily reading and printed reports are being built. The engine underneath them is already complete and is the part that took the work.
