Kālaprakāśikā 13
Daśakūṭa Milan
The ten agreements of the southern tradition
Kālaprakāśikā gives ten agreements and no marks. Each one agrees, is middling, or stands against — and the chapter closes by saying what to do with the ten: see whether the good is the greater part.
- Dina
- Gaṇa
- Māhendra
- Strī-dīrgha
- Yoni
- Rāśi
- Rāśyadhipa
- Vaśya
- Rajju
- Vedha
Ten agreements; the five the chapter calls chief are marked
The ten, named
Dina, gaṇa, māhendra, strī-dīrgha, yoni, rāśi, the sign-lords, vaśya, rajju and vedha. The count runs from the woman’s star to the man’s.
Next I shall declare the agreements (ghaṭanā) between bridegroom and bride: dina, gaṇa, māhendra, strī-dīrgha, yoni —
— rāśi, rāśi-lord, vaśya, rajju and vedha: these ten are declared. (For dina the tārās are) janma, sampat, vipat, kṣema, pratyara, sādhaka, vadha,
maitra, parama-maitra, and then janma again, repeating in cycles. One counts from the woman's birth star up to the man's birth star.
When the count ends on kṣema, sampat, maitra or sādhaka there is dina agreement. In the first round (of nine) vipat, pratyara and naidhana (vadha) are to be rejected.
Read from the count: dina, māhendra, strī-dīrgha
One number — how many stars from hers to his — answers three of the ten.
In the second round only the aṃśaka positions are to be avoided; all the others bring good. The twenty-seventh star is rejected when it falls in a different rāśi.
Vadha and vaināśika are shunned in the third round as well. The result of a vadha–vaināśika pairing is as Kāśyapa declared it (the pairs follow in vv. 7–12).
Counting from the bride’s star: the fourth, the seventh, the tenth, the thirteenth, the sixteenth, the nineteenth, the twenty-second and the twenty-fifth —

— these are the māhendra yogas, which increase auspiciousness and length of life. The count is made from the woman’s star to the man’s.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
Beyond the thirteenth star, strī-dīrgha is ample. Some of the learned say strī-dīrgha holds beyond the seventh.

Read from the stars’ nature: gaṇa and yoni
Each star has a gaṇa and an animal. The same is best, the different is middling, and the hostile pairs are listed.
together with Dhaniṣṭhā and Citrā, Jyeṣṭhā and Mūla are rākṣasa-gaṇa. Know the same gaṇa to be best; deva with manuṣya is middling;
rākṣasa with deva is inferior; manuṣya with rākṣasa means death. When the woman is of rākṣasa-gaṇa and the man of manuṣya-gaṇa,
the death of both is not far off — therefore a man should not marry her. But when the woman is rākṣasa there is no fault if (her star, counted from his) lies beyond the fourteenth.
— cow and tiger, rat and cat, serpent and rat, mongoose and serpent, and likewise deer and dog: these are enemies of one another. (The list begins in 13.34 with monkey and ram, deer and elephant, horse and buffalo.)
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
The same yoni is declared auspicious; a different yoni is middling; an enemy yoni is the worst. Thus the yoni is declared.

Read from the signs: rāśi, the lords, vaśya
The mutual position of the two Moon-signs, with six sixth-and-eighth pairs the verse excepts by name.
In the 2/12 relation (of the two rāśis) there is death; in 12/2, long life. In 3/11 sorrow; in 11/3 happiness.
4/10 brings poverty, 10/4 wealth; 5/9 widowhood, 9/5 auspiciousness.
6/8 brings loss of children, 8/6 gain of children. Marriage in mutual seventh (sama-saptama) increases good fortune and life.
Virgo with Aries, Taurus with Sagittarius, Pisces with Libra, Cancer with Aquarius, Capricorn with Leo,
and Scorpio with Gemini — these 6/8 pairs are held auspicious. (Rāśyadhipa:) the lord of Aries and Scorpio is said to be Mars.
Libra (for Leo); Pisces and Gemini (for Virgo); Capricorn (for Libra); Virgo and Cancer (for Scorpio); Pisces (for Sagittarius); Aries and Aquarius (for Capricorn); Aries (for Aquarius); Capricorn (for Pisces) — these are the vaśya signs of Aries and the rest.
The rope and the piercing: rajju and vedha
The twenty-seven stars are strung on five ropes — foot, thigh, navel, neck, head. Two stars on one rope count against; so do the listed vedha pairs.
Mṛgaśirā, Citrā and Dhaniṣṭhā — each of these lists is declared one rajju. (The verse then speaks of the ascending and descending of the rajju.)
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
(Of ascent and descent the verse speaks first.) In the foot-rajju there is living away from home; in the thigh-rajju, loss of wealth.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
The navel-rajju harms offspring; the neck-rajju takes the wife; the head-rajju strikes the husband — so they know the results of the rajju.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
— and Hasta with Śatabhiṣā: each strikes the other; the vedha is mutual. Among Mṛgaśirā, Citrā and Dhaniṣṭhā the vedha is mutual.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
How the chapter weighs the ten
One verse lifts four of the faults; one names the five that matter most; one says what to do with the whole.
Where the two sign-lords are one, or are friends, or the signs stand seventh from each other, there is no fault from rajju, vedha or gaṇa, nor any fault of rāśi.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
Dina, gaṇa, yoni, rāśi and rajju — these five are called the chief ones; dina and rajju above all.
English rendering by Horā — the edition on file carries a Hindi commentary only.
— auspiciousness and many children: such is the fruit of agreement in dina and the rest. If, among these ten that have been stated, the good is the greater part —

— (well and good); otherwise the wise man looks to the omens and then has the marriage performed. (The verse goes on to a list of stars.)

Match two charts
Only the Moon’s star and sign are used from each chart. Signed in, the first chart opens on your selected Kuṇḍalī.
How to use this
- Say which chart is the bride’s — every count on this page starts from her star.
- Look at dina and rajju first; the chapter names them above the rest.
- “Middling / not named” is not a fault: the verse simply promises nothing there.
What this page does not do
It does not decide a marriage, and in its own voice it says only whether a kūṭa agrees. The results the verses attach to each fault are severe; they appear only inside the verse itself, where they can be read in context, because a page cannot weigh them for two living people. Several rules of the chapter are not applied because their reading cannot be settled from the verse alone; they are listed under the result.
