Pūrṇā “the full”

The mind today

A thin bright curve returns to the evening sky. The mind turns outward again: curiosity and hope come easily. It is a kind time to begin small and let the habit grow with the Moon.

Pūrṇā — A day of fullness. Count what is already complete — write down three things that went well before you sleep.

Three things that help

  1. Start one small habit — five minutes counts — and mark it on this calendar.
  2. Step out after sunset and find the crescent in the west; a minute of looking up resets the day.
  3. Reach out to one person you have been meaning to message.

A japa for the Moon

ॐ सोमाय नमः

The Moon’s nāma-mantra — “Oṁ, salutation to Soma”. Eleven slow repetitions, facing the Moon or a lamp.

The five moods of the tithi

Nandā “the joyful”

1 · 6 · 11

A day whose very name is joy. Let one small delight be deliberate — music, a favourite meal, a call to someone who makes you laugh.

Bhadrā “the gentle, the wholesome”

2 · 7 · 12

A steadying day. Routine is medicine today: regular meals, a tidy desk, an early night.

Jayā “the victorious”

3 · 8 · 13

A day of resolve. Pick the one task you have been avoiding and finish it — a small win lifts the whole mind.

Riktā “the emptying”

4 · 9 · 14

A day for emptying out: clear a drawer, an inbox, a grudge. The almanacs keep new beginnings for other days, which makes this a fine day to let go.

Pūrṇā “the full”

5 · 10 · 15

A day of fullness. Count what is already complete — write down three things that went well before you sleep.

Why the Moon, for the mind

कमलजविधातृहरियमशशांकषड्वक्त्रशक्रवसुभुजगाः । धर्मेशसवितृमन्मथकलयो विश्वे च तिथिपतयः ॥ ९८.१॥

Brahma (kamalaja), the Creator, Vishnu (hari), Yama, the Moon, Skanda (shadvaktra, "six-faced"), Indra, the Vasus, the serpents; the lord of dharma, Savitri/the Sun, Kama (Manmatha), the Kalas (or Shiva), and the Vishvedevas -- these are the lords of the lunar days.

अष्टमी नवमी चैव पक्षच्छिद्राः प्रकीर्तिताः । नन्दा भद्रा जया रिक्ता पूर्णा चेति सितासिताः ॥ ९२ ॥

The 8th and 9th are declared pakṣa-chidras. Nandā, Bhadrā, Jayā, Riktā and Pūrṇā (are the five tithi-groups) of the bright and dark fortnights.

कृष्णे च बलिनः क्रूराः सौम्या वीर्ययुता सिते । सौम्यायने सौम्यखेटो बली याम्यायनेऽपरः ॥ ३८ ॥

In the dark fortnight (Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa), the cruel [malefic planets] are strong; in the bright [fortnight] (Śukla-pakṣa), the benefics are endowed with vitality. In the northern course (Uttarāyaṇa), the benefic planets are strong; in the southern course (Dakṣiṇāyana), the others [the malefics are strong].

Readings and suggestions are Horā’s own reflections on these classical meanings — everyday self-care, offered with the tradition’s goodwill. If low mood, anxiety or sleeplessness stays for two weeks or more, please speak with a doctor or a mental-health professional.
